Make room for him

Sunday, December 03, 2017

I’ve moved furniture around in my house again. We move things often, we like to change things up. But it’s meant that this year, there’s not much room for our nativity scene; one thing I always make room for at Christmas.

There is no perfect place for them.

So here we are: Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the wise men, some shepherds, some animals and an angel, squished in together. They all look very keen to see Jesus.

But maybe this is what is was like on that day.
Everyone together: people and animals, with all their mess, just wanting to see Jesus.

No private room.
No birth support team.
No perfectly styled Instagram announcement.

There was no perfect place for them.

It was real. It was raw.

It wasn’t where you’d expect anyone to be born.
It wasn’t where you’d expect a king to be born.
It wasn’t where you’d expect the Saviour of the world to be born.
But that’s because they weren’t expecting Jesus.

Radical Jesus.
Humble Jesus.
Ordinary Jesus.
Extraordinary Jesus.

There wasn’t a perfect place for him.
But he made his home among us anyway.

It was messy.
It wasn’t very welcoming.
But that wouldn’t stop our Jesus.

Make room for him.
Come. Get messy and fight the crowds. See Jesus. All are welcome with him.

Your life is the perfect place for him.
