Noise

At Christmas it’s easy to become overwhelmed by noise.
The sound of products scanning “bliiip bliiip,”
carollers singing “pa rum pum pum pum,”
santas shouting “ho ho ho,”
advertisers selling "buy, buy, buy!"

There is a lot of noise.

I think we might actually like it.
Under that cover of white noise, it's easy to hide,
it's easy to forget about all the commitments and responsibilities,
the struggles and challenges,
and     just     soak
in the noise.

We can cover up the voices we don't want to hear and instead to tune into the festive throng – it feels safe... comfortable. Sometimes we prefer not being able to hear.

But there is a voice that cuts through the cloud, a voice of one calling:
"Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation." [Luke 3:4-6]

And the voice becomes a chorus:
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." [Luke 2:14]

It culminates not just with any message, but a message that cuts through all the bliiips, pums, hos and buys...
The message is actually a person.
"In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son... the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word." [Heb 1:2-3]

This word speaks through and over the noise.
This glory shines through the thickest of clouds.
